Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin happen to have been the most famous American journalists who have founded Village Voice Media. They have also been seen exposing the illnesses in the governments of the day. The paper mostly publishes content for the people living in Arizona state and especially those from Maricopa County.
The states are comprised of so many immigrants from the Hispanic world considering that they are on the Mexican border. This has been a place where the majority have no legal documents and therefore cease to be recognized legally.
In effect, they haven’t been able to air their grievances well to their governments and therefore the resurgence of so many organization or groups that fight for their inclusion.
Michael and Jim besides being based in Maricopa County and publishing weekly news have found themselves in trouble after exposing the county Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The man used to exploit the immigrants, and there have been serious allegations from his office. The two journalists decided to publish a controversial article that exposed those illnesses.
The Sheriff was a dictator, and furthermore, he thought that he was untouchable. He used to oppress the groups that fought for the rights of those immigrants so much and thus instilling some of them with fear. It is also worth noting that they were arrested so that they could reveal the people who had read the articles that touched on Joe Arpaio’s behavior. They were arrested and were charged for what was termed as exposing the grand jury secrets.
That was the end of their long and moist trusted careers because there was nothing they have done while in prison and they happened to be managing their company’s daily activities. Their charges lacked enough evidence and were dropped by one Andrew Thomas who happened to be the county attorney.
Larkin and Lacey were released, but things had already changed. Their company was underneath, and they had to do a lot of work towards regaining the lost glory.
Their right had also been violated, and they went back and sued the grand jury, Joe Arpaio, who had prosecuted them and also the county attorney. The three were charged with violating First Amendment Rights and also the abuse of power. This was determined by a circuit of Appeals from the United States.
Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey case were settled in the year 2012, and it was agreed that they should be compensated with $3.75 as settlement or rather damages by the Maricopa County.
They used to fund towards the establishment of the Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund. This organization started funding movements that fought for the rights of the immigrants in Arizona.
They could fund any course as far as it had met the threshold. They also helped the organizations that fought for the freedom of expression across the world.
They also funded movements that fought and helping in seeking for public participation across Arizona State. This, therefore, would include the Mexican based border.
